The Story of Bodega Vila Corona in DO Costers del Segre

Bodega Vila Corona

Vila Corona Cellar is located in Vilamitjana (Pallars Jussà) in a semi-buried warehouse dating from 1993. It is surrounded by a vineyard of 11 hectares, planted in 1989. The grape varieties cultivated are Riesling and Chardonnay for white, and Tempranillo (also known as Ull de Llebre), Grenache, Monastrell, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds.

Soil

The vineyard is planted on a rocky land originated by erosion or Areny’s rock, from the Late Cretaceous and Garumnia formations. Arany’s sandstone is a quartzite composed of potassium, feldspar, quartz, quartzite, mica, and fossils, all cemented with calcite. Garumnia’s formation is composed of red lutites, with minor intercalations of fine-grained channeled stoneware.

Climatology

The Cellar’s location is characterized by a Mediterranean- Continental climate but influenced by the surrounding mountains. All our vineyards are planted in Tremp Basin, at an approximate altitude of 500 m. This area is bounded by elevations ranging between 1,100 and 2,080 m. which creates a specific and differentiated microclimate. This defines a situation of very pronounced temperature inversions throughout the year. Winter is cold, and summer is hot during the day and cold at night; which allows for slower maturation of the grape.

Rainfall ranges between 500-560 ml/m2/year, and snowfalls amount to an annual average of 1.5. The temperature fluctuates from -14ºC to 39ºC, with an average temperature of 12.8ºC. During the harvest season, it can vary from 25ºC to 8ºC.

This composition facilitates the drainage of the land, favorably influencing the quality of the wine.

The Village Vilamitjana, Lleida, Catalonia, Spain

Vilamitjana is a town constituted as a decentralized municipal entity (EMD) currently belonging to the municipality of Tremp, in Pallars Jussá, province of Lérida, Catalonia, Spain.

It is located in a very central position, within its region, 4 km southeast of Tremp, on the left bank of the Gavet canal and on a small hill that dominates the plain watered by the Noguera Pallaresa river, in Conca de Tremp. In front of itself, to the west and on the other side of the Noguera Pallaresa in the town of Palau de Noguera.

The old town has an urban layout of a walled town, built on top of a hill that dominates the plain, with the houses forming an enclosure accessible by several portals. The passage of time has led to the development of a more modern nucleus in the flattest area of the south-west of the town’s enclosure, which reaches the place where the road was passed, more modernly.

Like many old Town Vilamitjana is a walled town and is dominated by the castle, which was located at the top, near the church of Santa María, in the place that is still known by the name of the Castle, where there are various remains.
